I am just reading your book "One Square Inch of Silence" and thinking what you people are doing is so vital, planning to give copies of your book to as many people as I can. As a hypersensitive autistic woman I am keenly and personally highly aware of the problems of noise - I suffer almost daily fatigue from it, as well as having lost accomodation several times because I couldn't tolerate the normal day to day noise of my housemates or neighbours.

Are you aware of anyone campaigning similarly for noise pollution reduction here in the UK? I know a lot of outdoorsy people, many are aware of the constant issue of noise even in our so called lonely spots, but is anyone actually doing anything about it?

Certainly no care or support agencies cater for the aurally sensitive, and it seems a huge gap when we know noise stress can lead to suicide even in people with normal levels of sensitivity.

Thanks.

Visited on Sunday (September 26th) and the Jar was not to be found. Quiet, though, was… only one jet overhead during our hike, otherwise the loudest noises we encountered were the cascades and elk bugling.

Your book and ideas keep making their way into my posts at Of The Earth blog, at bwterao.wordpress.com. Please read my mini-review of your book and let me know what you think! It is a recent blog post. A couple posts before that is "Turtle Breath" that mentions your book as well.

Just thought you might be interested in some outside-the-PNW perspective:

In SE Arizona, Chiricahua National Monument (NPS) is relatively free of jet noise, owing to its proximity to the Mexican border well away from the major PHX, TUS, ELP flight paths. In fact the entire border area, east of Tucson and into western New Mexico, is among the quietest of corridors in terms of commercial aviation flyovers, that I've experienced in the lower 48. There are places here, generally between the international border and perhaps 5 straight-line miles south of Interstate 10, where an entire day may pass without a single intrusion, and the nights are blessedly quiet from sundown and on.

Your words pierce through my pessimistic attitude and ideals when it comes to the conservation of our National Parks. You are both inspiring and captivating to read about, especially your 'journey' to Washington D.C. 'One Square Inch of Silence' has allowed me once again to vitalize my well being. To refine my skills thus enabling me to support my instincts. If I only I was as passionate as you are. Hopefully, I will make it to Olympic National Park soon enough and bring silence with every cautious step I take. Thank you. You do not know the incredible impact you have had on my life. Continue the good fight Mr. Hempton.

I heard you and your recordings on NPR. I may never get to Olympic National Park, but I have been to Glacier and Yellowstone, and totally agree with the issue of noise pollution in these amazing natural spaces. You have my support!

Keep up the good work! The value of natural silence is immeasurable and has been ignored too long.
